NATURE

Pinsapar de Orcajo

Pinsapar de Orcajo

It is one of the slopes of the Sierra de Santa Cruz, in the municipality of Orcajo, one of the environmental treasures of our region is kept, and which is also a natural rarity : it is the well -known Spanish fir forest (Abies pinsapo) popularly called "el Pinsapar", which is the result of a bold and successful reforestation carried out at the beginning of the 20th century.

The rarity of the location of these fir trees in the middle of the Iberian Zaragoza lies in the fact that it is a very unusual species in these latitudes , with the Ronda and Grazalema mountain ranges being their northernmost natural enclaves of the peninsula. For this reason, since 2018 the Pinsapar de Orcajo was declared a "singular grove" by the Government of Aragon.

The north and humid orientation of the slope, an average altitude of about 1,200m, as well as the steep slope of the terrain, made possible the correct integration of this species of spruce with elegant bearing and easily distinguishable by its needles arranged radially in the twigs.

From the town of Orcajo, heading north, the PR-Z-60 leaves that through a forest track leaves us at the foot of the local Pinsapar trailhead. Walking through it, we will be struck by the impression of going through a typical coniferous forest of the Nordic countries. Quite a show on the wettest days .

In addition, being located in the middle of the Iberian Peninsula, it will not be uncommon to be able to see the powerful flight of a golden eagle in the heights, fleetingly see the career of a roe deer as we pass, or hear the mysterious hooting of the tawny owl at dusk.
